Wisconsin lawmakers react to deadly shooting of Alex Pretti

MADISON, Wis (CBS 58) -- Wisconsin lawmakers are speaking up after 37-year-old Alex Pretti was shot and killed in Minneapolis.

Some Democrats are saying ICE is out of control and making communities less safe, while Republicans are standing by ICE's deployment.

"I'm going to work with law enforcement all the way from the local, to state, to federal level, to make sure we have safe streets," said Tom Tiffany, Wisconsin Republican gubernatorial candidate.

Tiffany say ICE actions in Minnesota are getting criminals off the streets and improving our cities.

"How do you remove somebody that's a foreign national in your state, who has committed a crime, as has happened here in Wisconsin? How do you remove them without allowing federal law enforcement to be able to do their job?" said Tiffany.

Unlike Senator Tammy Baldwin, who took to X saying ICE and DHS are out of control and that she will not support funding for DHS without clear accountability and strong controls over the agency.

That battle over funding the Department of Homeland Security could force another government shutdown later this week if Republicans hold firm.

"I think we put in additional funding for DHS in this budget," said Tiffany.

Governor Tony Evers says Wisconsin is supporting Minnesota's lawsuit challenging the Trump administration's deployment of ICE in Minnesota, saying in part, “Wisconsin stands with our neighbors across the river in Minnesota. American citizens are having their rights and freedoms violated and are being put in unsafe and life-threatening situations in their own communities. Two have already lost their lives. It has to stop."

On Monday morning in Minnesota, leading Republican candidate for governor in Minnesota, Chris Madel, dropped out of the race after Pretti was killed.

"Today I end my candidacy for the great state of Minnesota. I have two primary reasons for this decision: number one, I cannot support the national Republican-stated retribution on the citizens of our state, nor can I count myself a member of a party that would do so," said Madel.

The investigation into the deadly shooting of Alex Pretti is ongoing.
