WisDOT exploring safety changes to I-43 at National Avenue Interchange
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) held a public meeting on Wednesday night, June 3, to hear feedback on potential changes to the I-43 at National Avenue Interchange.
“I think it’s a very important interchange, very important for the community, it’s a very busy interchange and it gets used by a lot of people,” WisDOT Project Manager Jason Dahlgren said.
The interchange is a center piece in Milwaukee’s Walker’s Point neighborhood, where Cristina Gonzalez lives.
“There’s more bikes,” Gonzalez said. “There’s more pedestrians walking.”
WisDOT is exploring the following options:
- No build, keep as is
- Ramp reconfiguration
- Walker Street connection
- Mineral Street connection
- Ramp removal
“If we can improve some of the safety operations and mobility of the interchange, I think it would be a great benefit for the community as a whole,” Dahlgren said.
WisDOT is currently in a year-long study phase, ahead of an environmental review, final design, and construction that would begin sometime in the 2030’s.
“I think living in Milwaukee construction is always going to be around so you just gotta deal with it to get to the final,” Gonzalez said.
