Woman charged in fatal shooting of Milwaukee dentist

Milwuakee County Jail, family

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 27-year-old woman has been charged in connection with a shooting that left a well-known Milwaukee dentist dead.

The shooting happened Saturday, April 19 at an apartment building near Park Plaza Court and Brown Deer Road. Akintunde Bowden, 41, was shot and pronounced dead at the scene.

According to a criminal complaint, an officer that responded to the scene spoke with a woman who was jumping around, crying, and appeared to be in a panicked state. She was identified as 27-year-old Keionna McGowan.

McGowan was placed into the back of a squad car in order to collect herself and started explaining what led up to the shooting.

The complaint says McGowan said she lives at the apartment complex and was home doing here hair, trying on clothes and listening to music. She stated she heard "loud, aggressive" banging on her door and when she looked through the peep hole, she saw a "large man who appeared to be intoxicated."

The man was later identified as Bowden.

According to the complaint, McGowan said Bowden was yelling at her about the music but could not recall any specifics about what was being said. She noted, the complaint says, Bowden was holding a beer can.

McGowan told the officer, according to the complaint, she felt uncomfortable in the situation and felt Bowden was behaving in a threatening fashion. McGowan reportedly told the man she would turn down the music and then closed the door.

The complaint says, McGowan told the officer Bowden then started kicking at her door, "as if he was going to break in." That's when McGowan got her gun, opened the door and fired one shot at Bowden. He was shot one time in the lower abdomen.

Another officer who responded to the scene spoke with a woman who identified herself as Bowden's fiancée. She reportedly told the officer she and Bowden live in the apartment complex but was not home at the time of the shooting.

According to the complaint, Bowden's fiancée said he had never confronted their neighbor about loud music before. It was her that had previous interactions with the resident to turn music down, and they had been civil.

Bowden's fiancée said it was unlike him to lose his temper and did not understand how this could have happened.

McGowan has been charged with one count of second degree reckless homicide, use of a dangerous weapon. She's due in court for an initial appearance on April 24.
