Jury selection was supposed to begin on Monday morning, but around 1:30 p.m., 28-year-old Keionna McGowan pleaded no contest to the fatal shooting of 41-year-old Akintunde Bowden.

In court, security video from the hallway of an apartment complex near Park Plaza Court and Brown Deer Road shows Bowden knocking on McGowan’s door. The partially obstructed security video shows Bowden lifting his leg, and some movement.

When police arrived at the scene, officers say McGowan was running, screaming for help. When officers entered her apartment, they saw Bowden with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen.

McGowan told officers she was listening to music when Bowden told her to turn it down, to which she agreed to do. McGowan told officers Bowden seemed intoxicated and returned a second time, kicking her door. That’s when McGowan shot him.

In court, McGowan pleaded no contest to homicide by negligent use of a firearm. It’s a lesser charge than she was originally facing.

“It was a possibility, that she possibly, wrong jury – she could’ve possibly got off. Her demeanor, talking soft, you never know. And we tried to get what we could get,” said Nathaniel Bowden, the victim’s father.

Prosecutors stated McGown told officers the gun went off and hit Bowden. She then put a towel on Bowden and told officers she hoped he didn’t die.

Prosecutors said in court, this shows negligence rather than her initial charge of second-degree reckless homicide. Bowden’s family says they just want their son’s dedication to public service to be remembered.

“It’s just a tragedy. A tragedy and it’s something that we will probably never get over. You know? He was a good guy. He was big, jolly, good guy and it was something that just happened and we wish it didn’t happen, but it did,” said Bowden.

McGown will be sentenced in May. In the meantime, Bowden’s family says they will be traveling to Togo, Africa to bury their son’s remains.
