Gov. Evers requests federal disaster declaration after April storms
CBS 58 MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Gov. Tony Evers has formally asked President Donald Trump to declare a federal disaster in Wisconsin following severe storms and flooding in April that caused an estimated $27 million in damage across the state.
The request includes FEMA Individual Assistance for affected residents in 19 counties and one Tribal Nation, and public assistance for infrastructure repairs in 14 counties and one Tribal Nation. A joint assessment by Wisconsin Emergency Management and FEMA found more than $9.8 million in residential property damage and more than $17.6 million in public sector damage.
Milwaukee, Waukesha, Racine, Kenosha, Jefferson and Washington counties are among those included in the Individual Assistance request.
"Federal support is essential to helping communities rebuild and recover, and Iâm urging the president to meet this moment with the urgency it requires and ensure affected individuals, families, and businesses receive this critical assistance as quickly as possible." - Gov. Evers
Evers noted the request follows a previous denial of federal assistance for similar storm damage last summer. The governor's office said it is urging the president to approve the request quickly.
The decision to approve or deny rests with the president, and there is reportedly no legal timeline for a response.
