MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Milwaukee County announced on Monday afternoon that the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) will be implementing two new programs in 2026 that revolve around improving safety on the buses.

First, MCTS will partner with the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office to have law enforcement on select routes.

Second, MCTS will change the public safety officer program to focus on fare compliance.

Ledonna Lavender says she rides the bus almost every day and can feel unsafe at times.

“I get into defense mode because I'm a Navy veteran,” Lavender said. “You just don’t know what’s going on, what’s gonna happen next.”

Lavender says she has concerns about people getting on without paying, and the safety impacts on not only the riders, but the drivers.

“There’s a lot of disrespect on the bus, you gotta watch yourself,” Lavender said. “One of the main things is people not paying -- people get on the bus and don’t wanna pay, the bus driver trying to explain it to them, next thing you know they are getting swung on or cursed out.”

Michael Proctor says he uses the bus all the time, for work, the gym, and other things in life.

“I think we need security just in case, you just never know these days,” Proctor said. “You never know what could happen, so just be ready.”

In a statement sent to CBS 58 News, MCTS says in part, “The safety of passengers and staff is MCTS’ number one priority,” and “We are looking forward to sharing more information about these programs in the near future.”
