CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee alderman is highlighting a recently passed rule allowing cars involved in reckless driving to be towed after the first offense.
Citing Milwaukee tow lot officials, Alderman Lamont Westmoreland says 100 vehicles have been impounded since the ordinance took effect four months ago.
That's helped bring in around $18,000 in unpaid fees and almost $3,000 in unpaid tickets during the 121-day period.
The alderman says none of the impounded vehicles were stolen.
In a statement Tuesday, Ald. Westmoreland said, in part:
"I am pleased that MPD officers are using this important new tool in the fight against reckless driving. And while the early metrics are very encouraging, these numbers don't mean victory. We will be closer to claiming victory when we all start to see driving behavior change (and feel safer on the roadway because of it), and that occurs in conjunction with a dramatic drop in impoundment numbers."
Westmoreland says he will continue to monitor tow numbers.
