17-year-old shot near Brady Street, Milwaukee mayor responds by encouraging attendance at ‘Peace Week’ events
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – Police are investigating a non-fatal shooting near Milwaukee's Brady Street, a popular area for restaurants and bars.
The shooting happened around 11 p.m. on Monday, May 18, near the intersection of Cambridge and Brady Street. The victim, a 17-year-old, went to an area hospital for their injuries.
Laura Thompson-Mason said she heard loud popping noises during the time of the shooting.
“I never really tend to worry about my neighborhood with that.,” Thompson-Mason said. “It is really rare around here still, so I’m hoping it stays that way.”
Police say while circumstances leading up to the shooting are under investigation, it is believed to have stemmed from an argument.
Jarred Wolfe said he previously worked as a bouncer at a bar on Brady Street and has visited businesses as a patron for 8 years. He said he was surprised to learn a 17-year-old was out in the area late on a weeknight.
“Where do their parents think they are? What are they doing around Brady Street?” Wolfe questioned. “I just believe that the safety of the patrons should be the top priority for MPD, city councilmen, and for the mayor.”
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said Tuesday he was not briefed on the shooting and encouraged people in the city to participate in events for Peace Week.
“I have not been briefed on that shooting just yet, so I’ll have to go back and get a briefing from police in my office on that one,” Johnson said. “But this is Peace Week, and there are a number of events we’ve made available to the public and will continue to talk about this week. If folks are interested in Peace Week activities, check out our flyers, come to our events, be a part of it and help to spread peace throughout the City of Milwaukee.”
Based on his experience as a bouncer, Wolfe said he believes security measures will increase with the summer months approaching.
"I do believe that they do have more of a presence of authority figures, if it's law or if it's private security. A lot has to happen for it to become safe here,” Wolfe said. “They do try to fix things, there’s just not much you can do when the young generation does not care about authority.”
Milwaukee Police continue to seek unknown suspect(s). Anyone with any information is asked to contact Milwaukee Police at (414) 935-7360 or to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (414) 224-Tips or P3 Tips.
