'He had big dreams': Family hopes for answers after 18-year-old Kenosha man dies from shooting following Racine crash
RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) — A family is searching for answers after an 18-year-old Kenosha man was found dead with a gunshot wound Wednesday after crashing a vehicle in Racine.
Relatives identified the victim as Geovonnie Amie and described him as an "all-around nice kid."
According to the Mount Pleasant Police Department, Amie was shot in the torso on Racine St. before he drove three city blocks north, where his car ended up hitting another parked car.
Racine Police Department officers responded to that traffic accident just before noon, where they found Amie unresponsive.
Emergency medical personnel attempted life-saving measures, but Amie was pronounced dead at the scene.
"It's a very raw, raw feeling," said Amie's cousin Nathan Pabon. "So, there are more unknowns than what we know now and that can be the hardest part. Why, when, why now, what happened?"
Pabon said Amie had turned 18 in April and was looking forward to his adult future.
"He had his car, he'd just got his license, started working at Amazon to get his life on track, was looking to potentially buy a duplex and starting to do things with his life," Pabon told CBS 58. "He loved his family and he had a lot of big dreams."
Officials said Thursday they have identified persons of interest as they work to figure out what led up to the shooting.
Amie's family started a GoFundMe to help cover burial expenses, which has raised about $800 overnight so far.
A vigil will be held Sunday, June 28 at 6 p.m.
"The answers to the questions will help, but it doesn't bring him back," Pabon said. "It's a life that will never be fully lived and potential and promise that will never be achieved because of an act of violence."
