WASHINGTON (CBS 58) — Former President Donald Trump will return to the White House in January. His victory over Vice President Kamala Harris was called in the early morning hours Wednesday, Nov. 6.
While Mr. Trump gave a victory speech at that time, Kamala Harris waited until Wednesday afternoon to call her opponent and concede, and then speak to her disappointed supporters in Washington.
Kamala Harris said that she accepts the results of the election and committed to a peaceful transfer of power.
The vice president said she called President-elect Donald Trump Wednesday to congratulate him on the win. She did highlight a couple of issues that were central to her campaign, like gun violence in schools and a woman's right to choose.
Harris seemed to recognize that many were disappointed with the election results, and she gave young people a message of hope.
"On the campaign, I would often say when we fight, we win. But here's the thing - sometimes the fight takes a while. That doesn't mean we won't win."
Harris says she is proud of the campaign that she ran. As we all recall, it was a shorter candidacy than usual, a 107-day campaign after President Joe Biden dropped his bid for reelection.
