Admirals hand out 6,000 cowbells during game, aiming to hit world record
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Admirals had a loud finish to their week of rebranding. This week, they called themselves the Milwaukee Cowbells and tonight gave away 6,000 cowbells - hoping to hit a world record.
The team sent a press release Friday night, saying they counted 6,768 cowbells ringing simultaneously, which would be a new world record. But we may never get that verified because we're told the Guiness Book charges $30,000 to verify. But people will leave with the memory of shaking those cowbells. They got at the door and filled the arena with a lot of sound in the second period and of course, going for "more cowbell."
It's been 25 years since Will Ferrell brought that kind of fun to the cowbell.
"Cowbells are also a very familiar thing for hockey fans in Milwaukee. It's been a long-standing tradition where people bring cowbells to games," said John Greenberg, president, Milwaukee Admirals.
This week, the Admirals are actually the Milwaukee Cowbells.
The team says they've got a fever, and the only cure is "more cowbell."
"The cowbells, I really do I think it's a good idea, kind of a different brand kind of promote us, go Admirals, go Cowbells," said Mark Stempihai, Admirals fan.
"I think it's great. It's a fun marketing opportunity, it's a super cool moment, it's just really summons the team's identity and the city, so I love it," said Quinn Jahnke, Admirals fan.
The world record for most cowbells rung simultaneously is 5,748. So, the Admirals gave away 6,000 cowbells at the door, and fans will be going home with a certificate saying they were part of it, but that may be the only thing that comes of this, other than hometown pride.
"Guiness Book charges a little money to actually verify, what was that all about?" CBS 58's Michele Fiore asked.
"Yeah, well they try to keep people honest," said Greenberg.
After the game, the Cowbell jerseys are being auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the Admirals Power Play Foundation.
