MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For seven-plus innings, Brewers fans battled their nerves. And the nerves were winning.

But then came the eighth inning, and more than 40,000 Brewers fans at American Family Field, and countless more listening and watching at home and on the road, were rewarded.

The Brewers came back to beat the Mets, 5-3, Wednesday, October 2, evening their Wild Card series at one game apiece and forcing a deciding third game Thursday at American Family Field.

The first sigh of relief came when star-in-the-making Jackson Chourio launched a game-tying home run in the eighth inning.

Fan Andy Newbauer said, "It was electric, I mean, the end of the game was incredible. Jackson Chourio, he's a stud. I mean, he's a stud, so clutch at that age, unreal. I'm just so proud of them, and coach Murphy and the team, and I think they can do it."

The explosion came a few batters later, when Garrett Mitchell launched the go-ahead two-run homer that proved to be the difference.

Devin Williams slammed the door on the Mets in the ninth, and the Brewers could finally exhale.

Brewers fan Erik Bakiewicz told us the atmosphere was "Electric, the best game probably I've been to all year."

Outside the stadium, a pair of fans told us, "The Brewers came to do two things: chew gum and kick some butt. And they're all out of gum! Let's go baby let's kick some butt!"

The win was a major reversal of the tides for Brewers fans, who got to celebrate just the second postseason win over the past six years.

Bakiewicz said, "You know, it's been a couple years since they won a playoff game so it's just good to finally see them get a win and come back tonight to try to squeak one out and go to the next series."

Adam Hernandez, a young fan from Mount Calvary, WI, told us, "The Brewers didn't give up. They kept persisting. And actually, this is my first ever playoff game. And I got a ball!"

Katie Frederick, of West Allis, said, "My ears hurt. It's like being at a loud concert. It's the best, the energy is amazing."

Matthew Sepersky, of West Bend, told us, "Man, it feels great. After going 1-10 in the past six years, amazing."

The Brewers-Mets series is the only Wild Card series to go the distance. Game 3 will start at 6:08 p.m. Thursday.
