Children's Wisconsin patients choose their own decorated trees at hospital's 1st Christmas tree farm
WAUWATOSA, Wis. (CBS 58) – At a place where some are stopping by for their annual checkup, there are others who have to call it their home for the holidays.
Leslie Scott, with Children’s Wisconsin, knows the holidays aren’t the same without some traditions.
“Our whole entire mission is to help kids be kids and families be families,” said Scott. “They’re having to deal with some really big things and it's these little things that help them get through those days.”
That’s why this year, Scott decided to bring a Christmas tree farm right to the hospital for the first time.
“There are Toy Story trees, there was a beautiful Bluey tree. There is a beautiful butterfly tree that went up to a very sweet little girl who loves it.”
Kids who are spending the holidays at the hospital get to pick out trees decorated and donated by J&J Flooring and Coakley Brothers.
“So this year, we started with 75. I think we’re gonna have no problem giving all of them away,” said Scott.
Sharon Jackson’s son was born in July with heart disease. She’s spent the last five months at Children’s Wisconsin. She had one wish this Christmas.
“I wanted to like, cut out a tree and get pictures developed and put them as ornaments, and that’s the first tree I see when I walked in there,” said Jackson.
It was better than what she imagined.
“I’m very excited to show him his first tree. It’ll be his first tree,” said Jackson.
So while this may not be your average Christmas tree farm, for these families, it’s a holiday wish come true.
“I love my job. Being able to help families have the holidays is one of the best parts of my job. I couldn’t have asked for anything better,” said Scott.
“God bless their hearts, because they don’t have to do it,” said Jackson.
