Early voters in Milwaukee continue to head to polls in large numbers to cast their ballots

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- In the first two days, more than 9,000 early voters have cast their ballot. Another 750 have registered to vote and more than 400 absentee ballots have been dropped off.

At the Capitol Drive Voting Center – you’ll find a line filled with excitement.

“The atmosphere is beautiful,” said Marcella Shaw, an early voter.

It’s the third day of the early voting period in Wisconsin and it's showing no signs of slowing down.

“That means people are taking it the way they should, seriously,” said Margot O’Neal, an early voter.

O’ Neal is a curbside voter. She says people have disabilities have a way to vote early.

“I have my cane and walker, and I said I can’t stand in line that long. It was really helpful to have curbside voting. So, if you’re handicapped, please don’t let that stop you. They’re prepared for you. They’re ready for you,” said O’Neal.

According to an unofficial count by the Milwaukee Elections Commission, over 1,600 people cast their ballots at the Capitol Drive Voting Center over the last two days.

“I think it's wonderful. I think everybody realizes that every vote is going to count, and we need to get out here and vote,” said Mary Kay Collins, an early voter. “I've been working on my nephews who are young. I said you guys gotta get registered. Every vote counts this year.”

Shaw says she waited in line for 30 minutes but says it's been an opportunity to talk to other voters and listen to what issues matter to them.

“It was a short 30 minutes because of my good company, my good people around me and stuff. Not long, so it's not discouraging to me,” said Shaw.

O’ Neal says she’s seen early voter turnout like this once before in her lifetime.

“Obama. Obama was the last time I saw it like this,” said O’Neal.

Others say early voting is an opportunity to get your voice heard.

“Whomever you vote for, I can feel the passion in the air, and I love it,” said Shaw.
