Milwaukee opens emergency warming shelter through mid-day Saturday amid dangerously cold temps
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Amid these dangerously cold temperatures, the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County have opened an emergency warming shelter inside of the Washington Park Senior Center on Vliet Street.
The shelter has snacks, water, and 50+ cots, offering warmth and overnight service through noon on Saturday, Jan. 24.
"It's important we continue to provide these spaces, right, being there for people during one of the worst times of the year when we think about our weather," said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. "And so, for us to make sure that those who may be unsheltered, those who may be looking to find some warmth, that we've been here for them."
Officials with the city's health department said now is the time to lean on one another and support the community.
"Many of the injuries and deaths related to cold weather are preventable," said Christine Westrich, the department's director of emergency response planning. "Our biggest message to everyone out there is to check on your neighbors and your family. A phone call can save someone's life and there's no exaggeration in that."
The shelter is located at 4420 W. Vliet Street, Milwaukee, WI 53208.
