Five rescued, dozens displaced after 14th and Highland apartment fire

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Five people were rescued from windows after a two-alarm apartment fire broke out overnight Sunday.

It happened just before 1 a.m. near 14th and Highland in Milwaukee.

The Milwaukee Fire Department says they responded the three-story building and could see fire on the second floor and people hanging out of windows.

Rescues were made and all other occupants were safely evacuated from the building.

According to the fire department, there were also working smoke detectors in the building which helped aid in getting people out of the building early.

As crews were responding to the fire, they say there were multiple fights between citizens near the scene. 

The Milwaukee County Transit System was called to help provide buses to hold up to 50 people that were displaced from the fire.

After around 30 minutes the fire was under control and there were no injuries to any occupants or firefighters.

The Milwaukee Fire Department was assisted by the Milwaukee Police Department, We Energies and Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
