KENOSHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A 33-year-old Kenosha man died Sunday night, Sept. 20, after a shooting inside Shenanigan's Bar near 52nd and 25th, and the man accused in the shooting was later shot by police officers as he fled the area, according to the Kenosha Police Department.

A childhood friend identified the victim to CBS 58 as Antero Medina, also known as Casper Medina.

Ashley Maravilla, who comforted Medina's brother outside the bar early Monday morning, Sept. 21, described Medina as a brother, a son and a father who was well known and well liked. "He's one of those people that they can go anywhere that they welcome him in, very happy, very go lucky. He wasn't there for violence at all," Maravilla said. "He'd get off of work and come and have a drink and play darts."

"I just came to say my condolences to the family. I just don't think it's real," Maravilla said.

Police say officers responded to Shenanigan's at around 8:30 p.m. and found Medina with gunshot wounds. He died from his injuries.

The suspect, a 45-year-old Milwaukee man, reportedly fled the scene and police say he fired at a responding officer as officers searched the surrounding area, hitting the officer's squad car about a block from the bar.

Two officers returned fire, shooting the suspect, who was taken into custody and is in stable condition at a hospital. No officers were significantly injured.

Maravilla said she was still trying to piece together what happened. "It was a shootout, so hopefully they will be getting justice for that."

The Kenosha Police Department says that the officer-involved shooting is being independently investigated by the Kenosha Racine Area Investigative Team, with the Racine County Sheriff's Office as the lead agency, per standard protocol.
