MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- CBS 58 covered a young man's signing ceremony Monday, June 24, but this high school graduate isn't going to college to play sports.
His name is Ayden Laskowski and he's about to become a full-time carpenter's apprentice, the product of a new work and school partnership program.
Ayden completed 450 hours of work while also going to school. He is the first graduate of a youth apprenticeship program based in Wauwatosa. While he was finishing high school, he was also learning the ropes at a construction site. Now, instead of going to college, he's been hired by Findorff Construction for what could be a good-paying career.
"When I was younger, I thought kind of the only way to go was really to go to college. but then I kind of found out about this and it seemed like something more for me 'cause I couldn't really see myself in college," Ayden said.
Ayden now joins Findorff Construction of Milwaukee.
Construction companies are dealing with staff shortages and this partnership with the Wauwatosa School District is designed to help both Findorff and young people looking for a future in the trades.
