Gary Day faces multiple felonies, $2M cash bail for alleged involvement in abduction of pregnant Wisconsin teen
JUNEAU, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The 40-year-old Arkansas man accused of abducting a pregnant teenager out of Beaver Dam is back in the state for his first court appearance.
Gary Day is facing multiple felony charges, including abduction of a child and child enticement, for his involvement in what authorities said was the abduction of a then-16-year-old girl in Dodge County.
On Thursday afternoon, Day appeared in a Wisconsin courtroom for the first time after being extradited to the state the day before.
Court documents reveal he and the teen started talking online last April, despite Day reportedly knowing she was underage "from the get-go."
The teen told police he provided her with food, shelter, and clothing, and said they had spoken about their relationship and were planning to get married.
Her father also confirmed with officials that the teen is pregnant with Day's child, despite the defendant denying ever "having sexual intercourse."
The teen was the center of a multi-state Amber Alert for months, before the two were located at a truck stop near Omaha, Nebraska, thanks to a couple who saw them and called 911.
"The defendant’s lack of ties to Wisconsin and his criminal record... the court finds the defendant presents an extreme flight risk and extreme risk to this victim and other potential victims," said Commissioner Steven Seim with the Dodge County Circuit Court. "The court orders no contact with the victim, her family, or her residence... I'm going to include another order that he have no contact with minors."
Seim also ordered a $2 million cash bail.
Day has a review hearing on April 23, which will be followed by a preliminary hearing on April 24 at 8:30 a.m.
