WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- Governor Tony Evers, alongside the Department of Transportation, announced a large new investment in bicycle and walkway infrastructure Friday, Aug. 21.

The $32 million in federal funding is meant to help expand 49 projects across the state.

The governor's office says many of the projects through the Transportation Alternatives Program will expand bike trails and pedestrian paths already in existence "to better connect communities and school zones" and offer "increased accessibility to sustainable transportation methods."

“These sorts of projects make a real difference in the quality of people’s lives, in the growth of our communities, and provide much-needed improvements to ensure our kids can walk and bike to school safely, workers can get to work on time, and Wisconsinites and visitors alike can enjoy new ways of getting around our communities all across the state,” said Gov. Evers. “A strong 21st-century transportation system works best when the needs of all users are accounted for, and that’s exactly what this program will help us do.”

The funds will be distributed based on population, with $1.5 million allocated to the City of Oconomowoc, $1 million to Milwaukee County Parks, and $870,000 to Ozaukee County.
