MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Hayat Pharmacy is aiming to raise funds to help survivors of the catastrophic earthquake in Syria and Turkey.

The UN projects the death toll in the disaster could surpass 50,000, a little more than the size of the population of Wauwatosa.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of people are displaced and many injured.

Hayat Pharmacy is supporting an effort to raise money for medical relief for victims of the earthquake through the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS).

"The word 'hayat' means 'life,'" said Hayat CEO Hashim Zaibak. "We're here to give life to people and I think of the people who survived this earthquake, the children, the parents, the spouses, who lose their family members and they're still alive they need to be taken care of so we're thinking this is what we can do as an organization."

Hayat will match donations up to $50,000, hoping to reach a total of $100,000.

"We know we can do this, we know we can make an impact," Zaibak said.

He added he's hoping the greater Milwaukee community steps up to help those impacted by an historic catastrophe.

"This needs the collaboration of all the communities to come and help the people of Syria and Turkey," Zaibak said.
