'I'm so thankful for it': Salvation Army provides Wisconin's largest Christmas Day meal in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Today, the Salvation Army provided Wisconsin's largest Christmas Day meal, helping make sure thousands of people didn't go hungry or without a smile this Christmas in Milwaukee.
For Crystal Griffin and her daughter, volunteering at the Salvation Army's Christmas Family Feast has become their favorite Christmas tradition.
"If see someone kind of sad, I turn that frown into a smile, you know I get to do that," said Crystal Griffin, a Salvation Army Volunteer. "Just being able to uplift somebody's day, because you don’t know what people go through on a daily basis. Just to be that first face they see when they come in the door it means a lot."
The Griffin's and more than 400 other volunteers came together to provide around 4,000 meals to families in need this holiday season.
"It means a lot just to see people smiling, see the kids so happy," said Christa Griffin. "I mean how could you really be sad on Christmas? It's nice to be able to come here and spread that love, that light and that joy throughout the city of Milwaukee because it's so needed."
The 35th Annual Christmas Family Feast spread the holiday spirit, providing free food, presents and even a special visit from Santa.
"It's from the person who is homeless, to somebody who is doing well," said Major Beverly Gates, Area Commander for the Salvation Army of Milwaukee County. "Everyone comes together in one place, just to enjoy the holiday,".
Those attending say they are grateful to be able to lean on their community and have a space to celebrate the holidays.
"I'm so thankful for it," said Mattie Lawson who attended the event. "No one had to worry about cooking, no one had to worry about trying to get enough money, so everyone could be able to eat comfortably. It was very nice."
Taking the stress out of the holidays, allowing more time to create memories with loved ones and making new friends along the way.
