'It's very scary': Milwaukee restaurant says reckless driving near storefront is out of control
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee restaurant is demanding change after they say constant reckless driving is causing major problems at their east side location.
"It's very scary," said Gregory Cilmi, co-owner of the Temple Goddess restaurant.
When Cilmi is at work, his eyes are drawn to what's happening outside.
"We are looking out our windows, and we are seeing the traffic just flying by," said Cilmi. "It's concerning."
He says reckless driving is non-stop in front of his store near N. Farwell and Lafayette.
"I want to make sure that my customers are safe, that the pedestrians walking by are safe," said Cilmi. "We shouldn’t have to worry about cars slowing down a side street at any time."
He says last year on Labor Day, the building was hit for the second time, causing the former owners to leave.
Now, since Cilmi set up shop in July, he's had too many close calls. Just in the past week, he says there were three crashes too close for comfort.
"It's a little frightening, especially if we have customers that are walking out the door, which was happening that night when the car came rolling right up to our front door," said Cilmi.
District 3 Alderman Alex Brower says the intersection has become a problem.
"This particular corner has been rather dangerous," said Brower. "We are calling on residents all over the east side to engage in what's called community-led traffic calming."
Now, Cilmi is doing his best to collect signatures and lead the petition for the neighborhood.
"I'm here 12 hours a day, six days a week, and now to have to go about collecting signatures from the neighborhood," said Cilmi. "It’s a challenge."
He wants to see speed bumps, concrete posts and reduced speeds to avoid more accidents.
"Just something, anything is better than what we have so far," said Cilmi.
Alderman Brower says once the petition is submitted for the intersection, it will be reviewed by the city's traffic engineers to decide what safety measures would be best. Then it will go to the Common Council to decide.
