Local organizations host forum to provide immigrants resources amidst changes to the nation's immigration policies
MILWAAUKEE (CBS 58) -- As President Donald Trump's immigration policies continue to expand, many immigrants say they're worried about their future in the United States.
At Milwaukee's Turner Hall -- local organizations and attorneys had one goal.
“Non-stop pretty much for the last several months, our community members, our neighbors, and our families have been upset over the postering and threats disrupting our communities,” said Emilio De Torre, the executive director of Milwaukee Turners. "We the Milwaukee Turners have been receiving calls to educate people on what their rights are."
It's one of the many meetings local organizers are holding to make sure immigrants in Milwaukee know where to look for help.
"There's so many rumors and false narratives circling right now. People don't know where to renew their different visas. How do they create a family preparedness plan,” said De Torre.
Organizers urged people to be there for each other. They say it can be as simple as building mutual aid funds.
"I'm hoping folks learn how they can support their neighbors, themselves, and their families. Dispel some of the myths and get some of the real facts and also know how we can support our neighbors and friends,” said De Torre.
Attendees say conversations like this are necessary.
"I'm really worried about many people who are being pressured, especially people of different color, who thought this country was a safe haven for them,” said Alheidis Gumbel, an immigrant.
They hope everyone in this community can provide each other with safety and hope.
I think it's really a good reminder to have those on hand so you can give them out to people and just be open and make friends with people,” said Gumbel.
Another forum for immigrants like this one will be held next week on March 24th.
