Local sports bars welcome Packers fans for Thanksgiving Day camaraderie
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- For many families, Thanksgiving is a day of traditions.
That typically includes turkey, and here in Wisconsin - a Packers game.
"It's a day of relaxation. Thanksgiving and Packers, it's really nice," said Packers fan, Wendy Wiesjahn.
The simple pleasures of Thanksgiving Day are often food and football.
Some enjoyed both the easiest way - at a Milwaukee sports bar.
"It's always a tradition, we're watching the game no matter what," said Packers fan, Lindsey Aponte.
Kelly's Bleachers on Bluemound was one of several Milwaukee establishments welcoming customers on the holiday.
"We do this every year," said co-owner, Anthony Luchini. "Going from family, or from one house to another, you might want to stop and have one, and say hi, and we make sure we're open for it."
For some, it's a stop after a busy morning.
"We helped set up the Turkey Trot today," Wiesjahn said. She and her group were up since 4:30 a.m., before going to Kelly's at noon.
Josh Regent was one of the first people in the door Thursday, Nov. 27. It's part of a 22-year tradition for his friend group.
"Every Thanksgiving, we go to Dyer Park, right by Pius High School, play football for an hour or two, then come here to Kelly's and have fun," Regent said.
For others, going out is a good excuse to take it easy this holiday.
"No cooking is good, not having actual plans, so we thought we'd come have a more relaxed day," Aponte said.
"That way, I don't have to clean up, I don't have the mess," said Packers fan, Walter Schneider.
No dishes to wash, while still 'gobbling' up a Thanksgiving meal.
"We do a turkey plate, just all the fixings and all good stuff," Luchini said.
"We come out and have a couple beers, and we're going to eat, and then we take a long, long nap," Wiesjahn said.
Fans were thankful for a Packers win - and quality time spent together.
"You've gotta keep traditions. Group's maybe getting a little smaller, we may be getting a little older, but we still have our fun," Regent said.
