Mexican Independence Day rally protests Trump administration’s mass deportations

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) – The Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression held a rally on Saturday, Sept. 13 to honor Mexican Independence Day, which is recognized on Sept. 16.
This rally happened after The United Migrant Opportunity Services (UMOS) announced they would pause their Mexican Independence Day parade and festival this year, citing funding constraints tied to the broader political climate.

Organizers of Saturday's protest said as the Trump administration ramps up deportations in immigrant communities, Mexican immigrants living in Milwaukee refuse to stay silent on a weekend meant for celebrating.
“Not only are we celebrating our heritage and independence, but we’re also protesting and marching and making a statement that Mexican immigrants or all immigrants in general will not be targeted, will not be threatened," said Julie Velazquez with the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression. “We hope that for people too scared to be in the streets, that they feel confidence that there are people willing to fight back.”
In their statement, UMOS said they remain committed to reimagining future events and continuing meaningful gatherings that celebrate and empower our diverse community.
