Milwaukee County Zoo mourns loss of zebra foal born in April

Milwaukee County Zoo

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Mistari, a zebra foal born April 22, was humanely euthanized Monday, June 15 after suffering a severe leg fracture during her morning routine at the Milwaukee County Zoo, the zoo announced Tuesday, June 16.

The injury, a severe open fracture to her right rear leg, reportedly happened when Mistari shifted to the outdoor zebra yard. The veterinary team gave her pain medication, took X-rays and flushed the wound, finding the bone had fractured into multiple pieces and blood supply to the lower leg had been disrupted.

After consulting with large animal veterinarians and surgeons, the team determined surgery could not repair the injury.

Mistari was born to Thelma, who arrived at the zoo in April 2025 from Como Park Zoo & Conservatory in St. Paul, Minnesota. Zookeepers had not known Thelma was pregnant, and Mistari had since become a popular attraction for visitors.

Following the procedure, Thelma was given time in the stall with Mistari. The zoo says it will monitor her closely, and staff will support each other through the loss.
