Milwaukee man charged with homicide in store shooting after pizza dispute
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 38-year-old Milwaukee man has been charged with homicide in connection with the fatal shooting of a store manager, according to a criminal complaint filed in Milwaukee County Circuit Court.
The complaint alleges that on Saturday, Oct. 19 at around 11:50 a.m., Charles J. Leggett shot and killed 26-year-old Jamil I. Owies at Action Food & Liquor near the corner 6th and Keefe.
Surveillance footage cited in the complaint shows Leggett entering the store and engaging in a dispute with Owies over a pizza order. Leggett allegedly complained about unsanitary preparation and requested the pizza be remade, which Owies declined.
According to the complaint, Leggett became agitated and after a brief argument, reportedly drew a handgun and shot Owies once in the chest before fleeing the scene in a black Nissan Sentra.
A store employee heard the altercation and the gunshot, the complaint states, and called 911 upon finding Owies unresponsive behind the counter. Emergency responders pronounced Owies dead at the scene.
Police investigators used surveillance footage and license plate data to identify Leggett and locate the vehicle. He was arrested later that day at an apartment on West Juneau.
Leggett is charged with first-degree reckless homicide with use of a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm by an out-of-state felon.
His initial court appearance was on Wednesday, Oct. 23.
