MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A Milwaukee police officer is recovering in the hospital after being shot twice near 27th and Wisconsin on Wednesday, Feb. 12. The suspect who shot the officer is dead.
Police say around 11:50 a.m., a person was walking near 27th and Wisconsin, firing shots into the air with a semiautomatic rifle.
Officers ordered him to stand down. Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman said at a news briefing, "The subject refused, fired shots at the officers."
Instead, the man started a gun fight.
A 34-year-old officer was hit twice, in the leg and torso. Norman said that officer was wearing a bulletproof vest.
A 37-year-old officer fired back and hit the shooter. The shooter was killed.
The injured officer was rushed to the hospital. MPD cruisers cleared the way for the ambulance.
He went into surgery, and by Wednesday evening his condition had stabilized.
The officer's family does not want his name released yet.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson said, "As far as me, and, I think, everyone who is here, owe a debt of gratitude to the Milwaukee Police Department and this officer who has suffered some injuries."
"I just heard 10 gunshots in my brother's apartment. At first, I thought I heard a city bus colliding, but it wasn't, it was someone shot and killed," said Shemeen Gonzalez, who lives nearby.
A nearby restaurant shared security images of the shooter with us.
"This is an individual during the day, which is never OK, using a firearm to bring violence into our community. I always say this, absolutely unacceptable," said Norman.
The investigation at the scene took hours, hampered by the snowstorm.
Norman said, "This is very difficult. We have a lot of different resources being utilized to do recovery of the evidence."
One officer at the scene told us police K9s were being used to help find evidence under the snow.
And Norman said many people shared information that helped the investigation.
Milwaukee County District Attorney Kent Lovern said, "There's an investigation taking place in accordance with the protocol here in Milwaukee County."
The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on administrative leave.
Both officers involved have been with the department for eight years.
The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team is now investigating the shooting.
And per MPD procedures, body camera video of this shooting should be released within 15 days.
The Oak Creek Police Department is now leading the investigation.
