MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Newly released Milwaukee Police body-cam video shows what led up to the shooting of 31-year-old Alonzo Smith in October.
The new body camera video shows Smith was inside a car behind an apartment building on 101st Street and Bender Road in Milwaukee's northwest side on October 10. Police arrived on the scene after multiple calls from residents saying they heard shots being fired near their homes. Officers walked in the parking lot with their guns drawn. The body-cam footage shows Milwaukee Police Officers yell to Smith, asking him to drop his gun and show his hands. After asking several times, Smith fired at the officers. Milwaukee Police Officers fired back, shooting Smith multiple times in the head and chest. Smith was later pronounced brain dead on Wednesday, October 17.
Smith's Uncle, Donnell Dowdy said over the phone Saturday that it was hard to watch the video. He said police, "shot him [Smith] down like a dog in the streets." In October, the family told CBS 58 News that Smith had a mental problem.
This is not the first time Smith has been shot by police. Chicago media outlets reported Smith was shot by Chicago Police four years ago and later reached a settlement with the city. They also report Smith had been diagnosed with schizophrenia.
The Wauwatosa Police Department is investigating the death. The Milwaukee Police Department released the edited video describing the shooting Saturday. You can watch it here.
