Milwaukee VA Medical Center receives Primary Stroke Center certification

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee VA Medical Center on National Avenue is being recognized as a Primary Stroke Center from the Joint Commission.

Now, ambulances can take veterans who are experiencing signs of a stroke to the medical center to receive appropriate care.

To celebrate the years of hard work, a ceremony and open house were held at the facility on Tuesday, Aug. 18.

CBS 58 spoke with a staff member on why the change in protocol can help save lives.

"Many of our veterans instead of calling 911 would actually come through the front doors with stroke symptoms which can provide a delay in their care with this newest certification they can call 911 and be ensure that if we are the nearest location they will be coming here," said Patrycja Kriesel, stroke and chest pain coordinator with the Milwaukee VA.

The Milwaukee location becomes just the third veterans affairs center in the nation to receive the certification.
