Milwaukee woman to be deported and pay back over $4 million after tax fraud

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 41-year-old Milwaukee woman Amalia Gamboa has been sentenced to five years in prison for tax fraud which got her over $4.6 million in tax refund checks.

Gamboa pleaded guilty to mail fraud, theft of government money and aggravated identity theft. She was ordered to pay $4,681,690.42 in restitution to the IRS. Gamboa also agreed to be deported to Mexico after her sentence.

Gamboa committed her theft by fraudulently obtaining Tax ID Numbers from the IRS. She used people from Mexico to apply for the ID numbers and then filed false tax returns in their names.

She committed the fraud from November 2010 until March 2017.
