MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The 2023 Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit took place Saturday, Oct. 21. As a longstanding annual event in the city, it's once again providing crucial resources.

The event was held at Destiny Youth Plaza and hosted by Mayor Cavalier Johnson's office and various community partners. Endless resources were available to participants including services in health literacy, parenting, employment, child support and debt relief.

Mayor Johnson says he's pleased with this year's interest and turnout. "We're putting all these resources under one roof so that dads in particular have the opportunity to get the tools that they need to become successful fathers and we need that because we need successful kids," he said.

This year's theme was "The Gift of Fatherhood," emphasizing the vital role fathers play in their children's lives. A variety of workshops were put together and designed to touch different aspects of fatherhood.

"I just want people to know that if they come to the Milwaukee Fatherhood Summit, they'll find out that there's things here that they didn't realize that they needed," said Darryl Davidson from the Milwaukee Office of African American Affairs.

City officials say they are dedicated to keeping the event running as a valuable resource for years to come, always looking to improve the experience.

"We've been doing the summit for years; however, Mayor Johnson has a new spin on how we're delivering so there are activities that are going to be different. There are more interactive and individualized sessions that personalize the information that they're trying to address," said Davidson.
