FOND DU LAC, Wis. (CBS 58) -- It's been a little over five months since a deadly officer-involved shooting took place in Fond du Lac. Police initially only reported that a gunfire exchange had killed a man and critically injured a K-9 officer. On Monday, March 25, new details into the investigation were released.

Officials announced the name of the suspect, Kyle Massie, 34, who shot himself after police confronted him back on Oct. 14, 2023.

This came after a woman called 911 saying she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted, according to investigators.

"Being held against her will, that firearms were pointed at her, that she observed the gun was loaded," said Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney.

Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney said the woman was able to escape from captivity at a residence near Drury Place and Western Avenue.

Deputy Sheriff Blaine Evans, with 5 years of law enforcement service, encountered Massie inside a vehicle.

"Deputy Evans had attempted the traffic stop with light sirens and a PIT maneuver Kyle Massie was refusing to comply with his demands and then exiting with a long gun and deputy Evans was privileged to use self-defense at that time," Toney said.

Officials said Massie was carrying an AR-style rifle. Deputy Evans' K-9 partner, Iro, was shot by Massie several times.

“Iro sustained significant trauma to his chest, significant trauma to his torso, significant trauma to both right legs," said Fond du Lac County Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt.

Officials said the suspect fired 11 total rounds, while the deputy fired 45 times in self-defense. The suspect ultimately shot himself in the head. New findings released by authorities suggest he was battling depression and was suicidal.

Authorities said Iro was a hero for attempting to save his partner's life. He had been with Deputy Evans about a year and a half when the incident occurred.

"This has certainly gotten a lot more attention because of the injuries to Iro but I think it’s important that we also think about deputy Evans and his quick actions," said Toney.

No charges will be filed against police in this incident. Deputy Evans, who had been on administrative leave, will soon move into a hybrid schedule.

Iro continues to recover from his injuries. He's undergoing rehab and physical therapy. Authorities said the dog is eager to get back to work and will do so, in due time.
