MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 24-year-old man is dead following a police pursuit that ended in a crash near 43rd and Oklahoma early Tuesday, June 13.

West Allis police were conducting an OWI investigation near 57th Street and W. Lincoln Ave. around 12:45 a.m., when an unrelated pickup truck drove by at a high rate of speed, eastbound on Lincoln Avenue. Officials say an officer caught up to the pickup truck and attempted to perform a traffic stop. The pickup failed to stop and fled from the officer.

According to police, the truck fled southbound on 43rd Street, blew through a red light, and another vehicle struck them. The truck then lost control and struck an unoccupied parked vehicle and then a tree on Oklahoma Avenue.

The driver of the fleeing pickup truck, a 24-year-old male from Milwaukee, died as a result of the crash.

No other injuries were reported.

The truck came to a rest near the front yard of the home of Emily Liebl. It was her parked vehicle that the truck crashed into.

"Our car was thrown into the street," Liebl said. "I was just completely shocked. When I went to see the window, it seemed like they were trying to get someone out of the car."

Police radio during the chase indicated speeds reached 100 miles-per-hour. Police radio also suggested a call to terminate the chase was made just before the crash was called in.

Deputy Chief Robert Fletcher with the West Allis Police Department was not able to go into specifics about the crash while it is investigated. He tells CBS 58 via email "pursuits are terminated either by the pursuing officer or a supervisor, when in their judgement the pursuing officer or general public would be unreasonably endangered. In making that determination, officers and supervisors consider numerous factors. These factors include but are not limited to the seriousness of the offense, road and weather conditions, speed, traffic, time of day, information regarding the driver of the fleeing vehicle if known and recklessness of the fleeing vehicle."

The Milwaukee Police Department is conducting the crash investigation.
