Pick 'n Save announces closure of 5 Milwaukee-area stores
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Pick 'n Save has announced plans to close five stores across the Milwaukee area.
On Monday, a company spokesperson confirmed the decision to close the following locations:
- 1735 W. Silver Spring Drive, Glendale
- 3701 S. 27th Street, Milwaukee
- 2355 N. 35th Street, Milwaukee
- 2931 S. Chicago Avenue, South Milwaukee
- 2320 W. Ryan Road, Oak Creek
The spokesperson said all employees will be given the opportunity to transfer to a nearby location.
Brittney Taylor is an executive assistant for Metcalfe Park Community Bridges and lives two blocks from the Pick 'n Save on N. 35th Street.
“This Pick 'n Save is the only grocery store in our immediate area," Taylor said. “It is the only source of food that this community has access to.”
Taylor says her and her family get the majority of their food from that Pick 'n Save because they do not eat dairy or meat.
“It’s not only going to be a financial burden, but a burden on the spirit and the stomach," Taylor said.
Pick 'n Save called the closures "part of a larger company-wide decision to run more efficiently and ensure long-term health" of their business
.“This is going to make our lives a lot more complicated, it’s going to bring on unnecessary hardship that our community was not ready to face," Taylor said.
Jessica Thompson is the Community Engagement Manager for the Milwaukee Food Council.
“It’s hard to hear that such a prominent chain in Milwaukee is closing down so many doors," Thompson said. “I think a solution would be to move towards a food system that doesn’t rely on these big grocery chains for our daily needs."
