State leaders unveil new legislation aimed at preventing reckless driving
WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- While people continue to drive recklessly in Milwaukee, Wisconsin lawmakers are proposing new laws, aiming to make roads safer.
The bill would set aside $60 million from the state's general-purpose revenue to be used for grants for traffic-calming construction projects.
Those projects could include building higher medians, curb bump-outs, raised crosswalks and roundabouts.
According to the Federal Highway Administration, roundabouts with stop signs reduce deadly and injury-causing crashes by 82%.
State Senator LaTonya Johnson is one lawmaker introducing the bill.
"Families worry about letting their children wait at the bus stop, senior citizens worry about crossing the streets and driving to doctors' appointments, our public works employees worry about doing their jobs," said Sen. Johnson.
State Representative Supreme Moore Omokunde says a similar proposal was in Governor Tony Evers biennial budget but was removed by the Republican-controlled Joint Finance Committee.
State Senator Johnson says she hopes to get Republicans in Madison on board with making streets safer across Wisconsin.
