Street at 24th and Burleigh renamed for legendary pharmacy owner
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee leaders are paying tribute to a man who has done business in the city for 50 years.
On Friday, the city re-named Burleigh between 24th and 25th Streets "Dr. Lester Carter Drive."
Dr. Carter's pharmacy has been on the corner of 24th and Burleigh since 1968. He's been treating generations of families in his five decades of business.
Dr. Carter says he tells medical students to use their skills to improve the quality of life of the people they serve.
"When people come in with problems, issues, that they haven't been able to get solved in other areas, then I feel it's your responsibility to use your training to solve their issues. Lord knows that's what I've tried to do for the last 60 years," said Dr. Lester Carter.
City leaders called Carter a trailblazer in the African American business community. They also say his pharmacy is a cornerstone of community health in Milwaukee.
