MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A United Airlines flight en route from Chicago to Minneapolis had to make an emergency landing at the Dane County Regional Airport on Friday, May 29, due to an incident involving an "unruly" passenger.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office says the diversion was due to the behavior of a 75-year-old man on the flight who had to be detained.

Upon detaining him, officials say the passenger appeared confused and in a mental health crisis.

In a statement, a spokesperson with United Airlines said that the flight landed safely and continued on its path following the incident:

"United flight 2005 from Chicago to Minneapolis landed safely in Madison, Wisconsin to address a security concern with an unruly passenger.  The flight continued to Minneapolis later on Friday."

The FBI Milwaukee office was also notified of the incident and said they were made aware that the Dane County Sheriff's Office detained the person.

"The FBI was notified that a commercial flight traveling from Chicago to Minneapolis was being diverted to Dane County Regional Airport," said Caroline Clancy. "FBI Milwaukee's Madison Resident Agency and local law enforcement partners responded immediately. A subject was detained by the Dane County Sheriff’s Office and afterwards passengers resumed their flight.”

United Airlines said the aircraft is a Boeing 737-900, that had 147 passengers aboard plus six crew members.

Officials say there were no injuries reported during the incident.

The Dane County Sheriff's Office says FBI Milwaukee's Madison Resident Agency is handing the investigation and has said no criminal charges are being pursued at this time.
