WISCONSIN (CBS 58) — Wisconsin landed just outside the top half of the country in a new ranking of the happiest states in America.

According to a report from WalletHub, Wisconsin ranked 27th among the 50 states, receiving an overall score of 51.22.

The report compared states across three main categories: emotional and physical well-being, work environment, and community and environment.

Wisconsin performed best in work environment, ranking 18th nationally. The state ranked 30th for emotional and physical well-being and 34th for community and environment.

Hawaii took the top spot overall as the nation's happiest state, while West Virginia ranked 50th.

New Jersey ranked first for emotional and physical well-being, with West Virginia finishing last in that category.

Utah ranked first for work environment, while West Virginia again finished last. Utah also led the country in community and environment, while Alaska ranked 50th.

WalletHub evaluated the states using 30 metrics across the three categories. Those factors included social well-being, sports participation, average work hours, job security, weather and safety.

Each metric was graded on a 100-point scale, with higher scores representing conditions associated with greater happiness. WalletHub then calculated a weighted average for each state to determine the final rankings.
