VP Harris makes campaign stop with Liz Cheney in Brookfield

CBS 58

BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Tonight, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris made a stop in Waukesha County - one of the so-called WOW counties that used to be reliably Republican territory.

While many of the Harris campaign's previous stops have been all about firing up supporters, Monday's visit was not aimed at Democrats.

Tonight, at the Wilson Center for the Arts, Vice President Harris joined former Republican Congresswoman Liz Cheney to discuss why they believe former President Donald Trump is unfit for office, a message targeting moderates and Republicans who have reservations about Mr. Trump.

Earlier this month, Cheney spoke with Vice President Harris in Ripon, which was the birthplace of the Republican Party.

Looking at recent election results, it's easy to understand why the Harris campaign is spending time in Waukesha County. While former President Trump got more than 60% of the vote in 2016, he did not fare as well as Republican Senator Ron Johnson.

Then, in 2020, Mr. Trump lost some support in Waukesha County, coming up just short of 60%. Again, his performance lagged behind Sen. Johnson's reelection in 2022.

Speaking in Waukesha Sunday, Lieutenant Governor Sara Rodriguez said she's optimistic Democrats are making gains based on the number of volunteers during this campaign.

The Harris campaign is focusing Monday on suburban voters.

Before coming to Wisconsin, the vice president and Liz Cheney held similar events outside Philadelphia and outside Detroit.
