'We're in desperate need of that space': Street Angels moving to larger facility
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A big step forward for one local nonprofit will allow them to help even more people.
Street Angels is a mobile outreach helping people without homes in Milwaukee County by providing essential items and connecting them with resources every week.
"The three nights that we're visiting people, not only are we providing dignity and cleanliness, we're providing that support and that hand up to get them out of their situation," Street Angels Executive Co-Director Shelly Sarasin said.
The nonprofit that started eight years ago out of a house has grown significantly, and after three years in their current location on Layton Boulevard, it was time to expand. On Wednesday, Street Angels announced on Facebook it will be moving to 125 N 120th Street in Wauwatosa later this month.
"The [new] facility is about double the space we have now," Street Angels Executive Co-Director Eva Welch said.
"We're currently seeing an increase of 400% from the number that we were seeing this time last year. So, we're in desperate need of that space and accessibility."
With their new location, Street Angels will be able to accept more donations. It also allows them to add a new item to their fleet starting next spring, a mobile shower.
"It's dignity on wheels," Sarasin said.
The new space also opens the door to another community in need of support.
"We're hoping that this facility, being right in the middle of Waukesha and Milwaukee, will help us make that little push to get over in Waukesha," Welch said.
As they take this leap of faith, Street Angels asks for your help.
"We're essentially doubling our expenses in order to better serve our community," Sarasin said. "So, we're just putting it out there on a whim that we get that support."
To make the move lighter, Street Angels is asking that you hold your donations until Aug. 7. For more information on Street Angels, visit their website.
