Wisconsin agency advising against spreading manure during heavy rain and melting

MADISON, Wis. (CBS 58) – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is warning farmers that with heavy rain and snow melting on frozen soil the risk of manure runoff is severe.

The DATCP wants farmers who are thinking about emptying manure storage to be aware that manure could runoff into streams threatening water quality.

Officials are strongly advising against spreading manure and suggest alternatives such as stacking manure away from lakes or rivers, drinking wells or areas with sinkholes.
