MADISON, Wis. (Channel 3000) - A Wisconsin man said his son, a Rock County native, died at a Marine base in California Tuesday.
Scott Weberpal, of Whitewater, told News 3 that his son, Marine PFC Ethan Barclay-Weberpal, was killed at Camp Pendleton in Oceanside, about 40 miles north of San Diego.
Scott Weberpal said in a Facebook post Wednesday that his son was stabbed by another Marine, but that there were few details as of Wednesday morning because of the ongoing investigation.
USMC Capt. Josh Pena confirmed that one marine was found dead and another was taken into custody Tuesday morning. The agency wouldn't confirm the identity of the person who died, but Pena said he expects to release the Marine's name Wednesday night.
According to Ethan Barclay-Weberpal's Facebook page, he's from Janesville and attended Parker High School. Janesville School District spokesman Patrick Gasper said Barclay-Weberpal attended Janesville schools on and off since elementary school. He spent his freshman and part of his sophomore high school years at Parker, then transferred to an out-of-state school in November 2015.
The family set up a GoFund Me account to raise money for a scholarship in his honor.
