Wisconsin teen charged after Water Street shooting, officer-involved crash

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - An 18-year-old Wisconsin man is facing numerous felony charges after prosecutors say he fired a gun in Milwaukee's Water Street District, struck multiple police officers while fleeing and crashed into another vehicle.

According to a criminal complaint, Hunter L. Meyer of Rothschild is charged with:

  • First-degree recklessly endangering safety
  • Hit-and-run causing injury
  • Second-degree recklessly endangering safety
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Additional felony charges related to the incident

According to the complaint, officers with the Milwaukee Police Department were conducting crowd-control operations around 2:15 a.m. July 5 following Fourth of July celebrations when they observed a vehicle circling a parking lot near Edison Street.

Investigators say officers then heard multiple gunshots coming from the area before the vehicle sped away.

When an officer attempted to stop the vehicle, prosecutors say Meyer ignored commands and accelerated, nearly striking one officer before hitting others as he fled. One officer was hospitalized with a leg injury after being struck by the vehicle, and several officers fired their weapons during the incident. The complaint states nine shots were fired by police.

Investigators recovered 20 shell casings, three bullet fragments, an airsoft pistol and a Glock handgun equipped with an illegal full-auto switch from the scene. Authorities also said at least one nearby vehicle was struck by gunfire and dozens of people in the area were placed in danger.

According to the complaint, Meyer continued fleeing through Milwaukee, driving at high speeds, swerving through traffic, entering oncoming lanes and sideswiping another vehicle before running a red light on W. Fond du Lac Avenue and crashing into another vehicle.

The other driver was knocked unconscious and hospitalized.

Police say Meyer fled the crash on foot but was later located nearby and taken into custody. Officers also recovered a Taurus G3 9mm handgun at the crash scene and a CZ 9mm handgun along the route where Meyer allegedly fled.

Investigators interviewed the six passengers who had been riding with Meyer. One passenger told detectives the group had spent the day at Summerfest before going to Water Street, where an argument broke out with another group. The passenger alleged Meyer was holding a handgun and began firing at the other group.

During an interview with detectives, Meyer claimed his group encountered one of his friend's "ops" before the confrontation escalated. He told investigators he believed both groups were reaching for firearms and took cover before shots were fired.

When asked about striking officers with his vehicle, Meyer reportedly said, "Then I accidentally, not accidentally. I just like go through them, and I accidentally hit the one lady police officer in the foot apparently."

In a follow-up interview the next day, Meyer reportedly acknowledged that when asked whether anyone in his group was armed, he responded, "...think like everybody did."

The case remains under investigation.
