MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation's Zoo Interchange North Leg project is planning a 31-hour full freeway closure of I-41 between Watertown Plank Road and Burleigh Street this weekend.

The closure is set for Friday, Jan. 6 through Sunday, Jan. 8, and will allow for the demolition of the temporary Union Pacific Railroad bridge over the freeway.

The full closure will begin at 11 p.m. and run through 6 a.m. Sunday morning.

The DOT says the closure will impact the freeway between Watertown Plank Road and Burleigh Street. WIS 100 (Mayfair Road) will be the primary detour route during the closure.

Delays are anticipated.

Motorists are being asked to consider an alternate route if the desired destination is located outside the area of the closure.

This work remains weather dependent. In case of inclement weather, work will be rescheduled for a future weekend.

"Working through the design process, we decided just doing this through one extended 31-hour closure period would be the best approach," said WisDOT project manager, Sean Race.

Race said this 31-hour closure will be the last extended closure for the Zoo Interchange North Leg project.

"We've had two this past year, and this will be the last one. So, beyond this, we'll have some sporadic nighttime closures, but nothing during the day," Race said.

Both northbound and southbound drivers will be able to rely on Highway 100/Mayfair Road for detours.

"Plan for a little extra time and have patience, but you'll definitely get to where you need to go," Race said.
