MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Another grocery store is closing on Milwaukee's northwest side, creating concern for shoppers in the area.

Sentry Foods on Silver Spring Dr. has a sign posted outside the store that reads, "It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that this store is permanently closing...many factors were carefully considered before coming to this difficult conclusion."

On Monday, Jan 19, shoppers came in to fill their carts as an "everything must go" sale gave customers 40% off groceries.

“They got some good deals there,” shopper Barbara James said. “I can’t believe what I got.”

The store opened in December of 2023. According to a document with the City of Milwaukee, the store was expected to serve 12,000 customers.

James, and other shoppers Joanna Pomeremke and Innocent Nwagbara, said the store is in an area where there aren’t many other options for fresh produce.

“Where are you going to go and get tomatoes, and oil and potatoes, you need somewhere that’s close to home, convenient?” Nwagbara said.

Just blocks away, an Aldi located on Sherman and Custer recently closed last Sunday. There are two remaining Pick ‘N Save stores in the area, but that would be less convenient for some shoppers that live closer to the Sentry Foods.

Upon the Aldi closure, Milwaukee Alderwoman Andrea Pratt called the closing “disappointing.”

"I will be working closely with city staff and our local business community to see what we can do to attract new grocery outlets to the 1st District and the north side,” Pratt said in a statement.

CBS 58 reached out to Sentry for a comment but has not heard back yet.
