MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- More than 100 people gathered on Vliet Street on Saturday, June 6 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center. It opened in 1976 as a hub for recreation and resources on Milwaukee's north side.
The celebration featured live music, free food and ice cream and face painting for children.
"I didn't think I was going to become so invested but I've become so invested to continue on until we can reach all the people that need whatever services we can provide in the King Center," said Director Dee McCollum. "I want us to continue to be a safe haven and continue the path that was started 50 years ago."
The center offers child support services, karate classes and will host a Fourth of July picnic on its grounds next month.
