'He was a good guy': Victim identified in broad daylight shooting on Milwaukee's south side
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — We're learning more about a man who was shot and killed on Milwaukee's south side Tuesday afternoon.
It happened in broad daylight near 7th and Mitchell Street.
A small memorial was set up at the scene Wednesday.
Family tells CBS 58 the victim was 52-year-old Othon Herrera, and those who knew him are in shock.
"I wouldn't imagine who would want to shoot him and kill him," said Ashley Gilbo, a close friend of Herrera. "He was a good guy, you know. Went to work every day, came home, he took my kids to school for me while I worked."
Gilbo said she has known Herrera for most of her life and has lived with him for the last two years - just blocks from where he was killed.
Surveillance video obtained by CBS 58 shows a truck crash into a pole on 7th Street.
Gilbo said that was Herrera's vehicle.
After the crash, a person is seen getting out of the truck and running away; Gilbo doesn't know who that could have been.
She said Herrera is from Mexico, but owns two homes in Milwaukee, where he worked as a construction worker.
Her daughter last saw him leaving the house at 7 a.m. Tuesday for work.
"I hope whoever shot and killed him, I hope they get justice for what they did to somebody that was a really nice person," Gilbo said.
Milwaukee police said Wednesday they are still looking for an unknown suspect and have no updates to share.
