CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Jewish Community Pantry on 29th and Center serves people in need in Milwaukee's central city. On Thursday, Dec. 18, the pantry offered some extras in the spirit of the holiday season.
They called it "Community Joy Day." Thanks to a grant from Milwaukee County Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), people stopping at the pantry were given the choice of a turkey or a ham with all the fixings for a holiday meal.
On top of that, there were gifts for kids, baby products, personal supplies and nurses were on hand for on-site health screenings.
"The beauty of Milwaukee is that everybody's 12 minutes away from each other. But it's also the responsibility of Milwaukee, that every neighbor that's challenged or suffering," said Mark Shapiro, president and CEO of Harry & Rose Samson Family JCC. "They're just a few minutes away from all of us and we can do something about hunger."
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson stopped by to visit and hand out food. A DJ was also there spinning tunes, adding to the festive atmosphere.
CBS 58 was not there for the entire event, but they were expecting hundreds of guests during its three-hour run.
